Viticulture
Elderton has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1982. We are still very proud custodians of the family estate located in Nuriootpa where all of Elderton’s icon wines are produced, but in recent years we have been able to acquire other significant sites around the Barossa to further show case what the Barossa has to offer. These vineyards are highlighted in the Our Vineyards section.
In addition to our estate vineyards, we have been proactively sourcing the best fruit from dedicated growers on a contract basis who understand quality. Our winemaking team works very closely with these growers throughout the year to produce quality fruit and their focus is characterised as longer term, low yields, low irrigation and minimal inputs. We are excited by some of the fruit that is being delivered. Again more information on these vineyards can be found in the Our Vineyards section.
Increasingly we are also turning to biodynamic farming practices in our estate vineyards. Starting in 2007 we have farmed an old block of shiraz and cabernet on the main estate vineyard biodynamically. We plan to do a 3-year trial with the fruit and based on the quality of the resultant wine, if there is a noticeable step up in quality we will look to convert all of our estate holdings over. Our first biodynamic wine was released in mid 2009.
