Eden Valley Riesling
History
This is our 24th vintage of Riesling and is the 13th consecutive year of 100% Eden Valley origin. This dedication to Eden Valley for our Riesling has again been rewarded with this excellent expression, of which is still very much an underrated variety in Australia. The 2009 vintage produced small harvests of fruit, which showed wonderful primary, zesty characters and delicate acid structures. Whilst Elderton has typically been recognised for their robust red varietals such as Shiraz and Cabernet, this Eden Valley Riesling has, in itself, built an enviable pedigree. The 2007 vintage won the Trophy for the ’Best Current Vintage Riesling’ at the 2007 International Riesling Challenge, with the 2008 vintage following up with a Gold medal & Trophy for ’Best Dry White Varietal’ at the 2008 Perth Royal Wine Show. We believe this to be another superb release.
Winemaking
Quick separation of the juice from the skins gives the purest juice possible. A long cool ferment and prompt separation from the yeast lees has given a truly vibrant Riesling of classical style. Bottled very early to capture all the fresh citrus/lime characters and to hold the crisp finish. This Riesling is straight as an arrow, showing classical and stylish refinement in the mid palate and balances with an amazing crisp finish.” - Richard Langford
Viticulture
The Eden Valley sub-appellation of the Barossa varies tremendously in climatic conditions and soils from that of the Barossa valley floor. The climate is cooler and wetter and the soils tend to be skeletal and minerally, which is a major determinant in growing some of Australia’s and indeed, the world’s best Riesling. Care is taken in every step of the vine cycle, hand pruning, careful selection of picking time and many hours of nurturing throughout the year all contribute to the wonderful results found in the bottle. This Riesling predominantly comes from the Storton Vineyard, located just outside the township of Eden Valley.

Reviews
- 92 POINTS - Campbell Mattinson,The Wine Front - Elderton has been making Riesling from the Eden Valley for 25 years. The grapes for this wine were sourced from two vineyards. Eden Valley to its back teeth. Ever so floral. Flavours of lime and lemon with a slatey aftertaste. Exemplary dryness. The finish almost feels grainy, it's so dry. It has 'lilt' to it too, in that the flavours swing through your mouth, rather than just bursting through to the finish. Means it has flavour as well as acid, I guess. And of course, this is part of why it feels so delicate. Lovely wine.
- James Halliday - Australian Wine Companion 2011 - 92 POINTS, rated 'Special value for money' - Quite a perfumed bouquet of bath talc and lemons, with a distinct mineral edge; generous on entry, with fleshy citrus fruit, the palate tightening on the finish, with pure citrus lingering for some time.
